“I would vote for Bach, all of Bach, streamed out into space, over and over again. We would be bragging of course, but it is surely excusable to put the best possible face on at the beginning of such an acquaintance. We can tell the harder truths later” - Lewis Thomas on CETI’s 1974 experiment (rather nice, I think).

I wish my library looked like this……….

The bookcases remind me of my aunt’s old library, which faded childhood wonderment has probably aggrandised far beyond what it really was - but, just looking at this picture, I can smell the wall of soft, dusty book smells and the beeswax that she’d forever rub on the stacks themselves. I’ve never, though, seen a reading chair that ridiculously desirable, and that butler’s tray - The worth of a library is in its books, not in its aesthetics, and I’d take the perfect selection of books piled on the bathroom floor in a bedsit in Motherwell over the Twilight trilogy enshrined here, but, god, this is nice.
